Sisters again

I just read this in one of Vicki’s newsletters: “Fighting isn’t usually because kids ‘can’t stand each other,’ and although this isn’t where it starts, if it goes on long enough, it is where you end.” As I read that I felt a wave of relief and gratitude. That’s where we were headed 5 months ago. Five months ago, Fenner and Charlotte were like oil and water (oil and water that could hit, kick, and yell). And now, as I write this — as I have some quiet time to write this — they have been playing nicely together for over an hour (along with their cousin who is Fenner’s age):

So close and yet so nice!

So close and yet so nice!

These five months have not been smooth sailing. But to see this result in spite of all the bumps and setbacks, it makes it so clear that parenting perfection is not required — not even close. We can bumble along in the general direction of where we want to go, make tons of mistakes, and still have a huge positive impact on our family.

It’s true that the devil’s in the details. Vicki reminded me not too long ago, “If you feel yourself getting bogged down by the details, that’s the time to pick your head up and remind yourself of big picture.” Keep that big picture in sight, and you really can’t go wrong. My big picture looks like this:

  • Trust in myself and the people I love
  • Focus on the positive
  • Foster independence
  • Say thank you
  • Seek opportunities to connect, play, and laugh

I picture these guiding principles — these attitudes — as my fleet of big ships staying straight and steady while the details are a swarm of little boats sailing into the wind, tacking back and forth, occasionally capsizing, but mostly headed in the right direction.

Okay, I am waiting. Don’t mean to be impatient here, but dang, I AM impatient.

I have a technical question for you about blogging.

How do you stop advertisers from posting dumb things at the bottom of your blog?

Next post coming today, I promise!

My blog uses as a spam filter. This seemed to be an automatic feature when I signed up with wordpress, but maybe I had to check a box or something… Wish I could be more specific…
